About the World Birding Center
The world class 4,500 square foot facility offers educational exhibits featuring large marine animals, birds, and historical objects. The birding center is located on the Laguna Madre waterfront near the convention center offering nature trails with strategically placed blinds to give visitors an opportunity to get up close to the wildlife. Native planting areas allow a convenient spot for visitors to see migrating songbirds along with South Padre Island's dazzling butterfly population. With over 306 recorded bird species and the convergence of neo-tropical songbirds that are present during the spring and fall migrations, South Padre Island has become one of the premier birding locations in the Western Hemisphere.
On its 50 acres near the convention center, the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center presents rich habitats including dune meadows, salt marsh and intertidal flats, along with thickets of native shrubs and trees that attract migrating birds in their season. South Padre Island is the first landfall for birds making the cross Gulf migration and is a lifesaving landfall for warblers, tanagers, orioles and thrushes. A range of shorebirds and waterfowl can be spotted in the wetlands, while endangered species such as the Brown Pelican, Piping Plover and Peregrine Falcon may be found here as well.
